Hill Station Coorg


Coorg is an enthralling expanse of scenic beauty that nestles amidst the hills and valleys of the picturesque Western Ghats. It is one of the most pictorial hill stations of South India widely known for its coffee. The coffee estates here produce some of the world's best coffee. The other specialties here are honey, cardamom, pepper and oranges. Kodavas, the fine-looking natives of Coorg are known for their hospitality.

Situated at an altitude of 1170 m above sea level, it is situated at a distance of 100 kms from Mysore. Coorg offers attractive and historic places for tourists to visit. Madikeri also known as Mercara is the headquarters of Coorg. Fresh clean air and the awesome serenity abound this scenic hill station.

Major Attractions At Coorg Hill Station

Madikeri Fort: The famous historic monument, Madikeri Fort is located in the center of the town. It was built in the 19th century. There is a palace and a prison inside the fort. The fort has a small museum that displays some arms, armor, historical paintings and articles of the previous rulers for the tourists.

Omkareshwara Temple: Tourists who are religious must visit the Omkareshwara Temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple was constructed in 1820 by the then reigning King of Coorg. The temple is known for its magnificent blend of architectural features in the Islamic and Gothic style. There is a gilded ball with a weather clock over the dome of the temple.

Bhagamandala Temple: Another famous temple in Bhagamandala, 30 km away from Coorg, is the Bhagamandala Temple, which is known as the temple town of the region.

The Waterfalls of Coorg: The most famous river of Karnataka, Cauvery meets rivers Sujyothi and Kannike at Coorg. The popular falls, Abbi Falls or the Jessey Falls is just 5 km from Coorg. Abbi in local dialect means 'fall'. One can easily view the greenery of the Western Ghats from this place. It is said that Raja's Seat, the place where the erstwhile kings of Kodagu, spent their leisurely evenings.

How to Reach
By Air: The nearest airports are Mangalore 136 km and Bangalore 260 km.
By Rail: The nearest Railway Station to Coorg is Mysore situated at a distance of 114 km.
By Road: Coorg has well-developed roads connecting it to Mysore 120 km, Mangalore 136 km and Bangalore 260 km.
