Coorg is rich with dense green forests, and hence the name Kodagu, from which the name Coorg was derived. The dense forests of Coorg are the habitats of numerous rare wildlife species, few of which are unique only to this place. Coorg also boasts of housing one of India finest wildlife sanctuary - Nagarhole National Park. Besides Nagarhole, Dabure is an elephant capturing and training camp, located at the edge of Dubare forest, on the banks of the river Cauvery. If you love elephants, then this is the place for you. Nagarhole is probably the most preferred tourist spot at Coorg and also one of the best tourist destinations of Karnataka state. The sanctuary abounds with rich wildlife resources, which includes both flora & fauna. If you are in Karnataka, be it for a leisure trip or a business trip, just try to give a visit to this wildlife park, a place that will leave you astound.

Nagarhole National Park
The national park derives its name from the number of streams, which snake through its rich tropical forests. The Nagarhole National Park was first set up in 1955. It is considered as one of the best sanctuaries in South India, providing natural living conditions to several wild animals like elephants, tigers, panthers, rhinos and wild elephants, but one is more likely to see smaller animals the like gaur, deer, wild dogs and langur. Jungle safaris are also available on elephant back.

The scenic 640 sq kms of gently undulating terrain of Nagarhole at the foothills of the Brahmagiri hills is covered with thick tropical forests, grassy swamps and numerous rivers and streams. The picturesque park and the animal life is part of the country's first "bio-sphere reserve".

Wildlife Attractions: One can find elephants, tigers, leopards, sambars, spotted deers, and bisons, panther, sloth bear, gaur, chital and other mammals like muntjac, the tiny mouse deer, giant squirrel, slender loris, langurs, wild boar, pangolin and macaques. The Park is home to about 250 bird species like Malabar trogan, the Indian Pitta, green imperial pigeon the Malabar pied hornbill and the great black woodpecker.

Best Time to Visit the Park : The best time to visit the national park is from October to April.

By Air: The nearest airports are Mysore and Bangalore. The Bangalore airport is well linked with all the major cities in India.
B y Road:
Nagarhole National Park is well connected by road with the major towns like Madikeri (93 km), Mysore (96 km) and Bangalore (236 km).
